The Murray State University campus remains without power shortly after noon on Saturday, Feb. 15.
According to a statement emailed to the campus community, Murray Electric System and outside electrical contractors are on campus now to address the outage. Emergency generators are operating on campus, and the University plans to have power restored soon.
Murray Electric System responded to an outage on the northwest area of Murray early Saturday morning. According to their Facebook page, power was restored with the exception of the Murray State campus. Their comment on their post said the campus outage would be handled by Facilities Management.
The women’s basketball game against the University of Northern Iowa, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., has been moved to 3 p.m.
This is a developing story.

Feels like there’s an opportunity here for some investigative journalism. It is understandable that weather events are unpredictable, but effective disaster recovery and communication plans seem to be lacking. There is at the very least an appearance of prioritizing sporting events over student dorms. As a parent paying room and board for a student that is required to live on campus, I am disappointed in the response (or at least the ineffective communication about the response) by MSU. This isn’t the first time this academic year the campus has had long term power outages. For all the “we are a family” talk during orientation sessions, this shouldn’t be how you treat “family”.

I do not think prioritizing athletics ahead of students in the dorms is the problem. A reason of a lightening strike is hard to stomach as there has not been much lightening lately. Damage to a substation would be my guess, and Murray Electric not large enough to quicky deal with the problem. If I remember correctly there was a similar problem 2 months ago. Maybe twice is one time too many, lets bring in the big boys and fix this!
