No weather delays stopped the momentum built going into day two of the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament.
In the third game of the night, the No. 3 seed Murray State Racers faced off against the No. 2 seed Indiana State Sycamores. Despite being the hosts of the tournament, the Racers were the “visiting” team for this game, as they were the lower seed.
Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings. Junior starting pitcher Jacob Hustedde had five strikeouts in those innings and Indiana State’s Ryan Karst had two.
The Sycamores got the scoring started thanks to a two-run homer by Caden Miller with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Murray State didn’t find their way onto the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, senior outfielder Kainen Jorge hit a single into center field which scored graduate catcher Parker Airhart. Racers trailed 2-1 and the game was rapidly approaching the end.
No more runs were scored until the top of the eighth inning. Jorge came through with a two-out, two-RBI double into right field which scored graduate utility Connor Chisholm and senior infielder Luke Mistone. Those runs gave the Racers a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.
Graduate relief pitcher Ben Rosin with one out in the bottom of the eighth and finished the game for the Racers. Rosin finished the game with three strikeouts and earned a save.
Jorge was the Racers’ MVP, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI’s. Mistone went 1-for-3, stole a base and scored a run. Hustedde pitched 7 ? innings, recorded eight strikeouts and gave up two runs on three hits.
Murray State advances through the winner’s bracket and will play the top-seeded UIC Flames at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 22. You can stream the game on ESPN+.
