Following an attack by the online ransomware group ShinyHunters, Murray State University’s Canvas page has been taken offline.
Earlier this month, ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for a data breach of Instructure, Canvas’s developer and publisher company. Allegedly, thousands of schools nationwide were at risk of major data breaches. Following the initial attack, Instructure implemented security patches to address the breach.
However, as of 3:30 p.m. on May 7, Canvas has once again been breached, with ShinyHunters claiming responsibility in a message displayed on Canvas websites. Following the attack, Murray State University has removed Canvas from its pages, and the platform is inaccessible to students.
In a statement from Campus News, Instructure informed the University of possible breaches of student information. According to the statement, this includes “Legal or Preferred First Name, Legal Last Name, MSU email address, M#, course enrollments, and messages among users.” This information does not include personal information such as birth date, Social Security Number, addresses, phone numbers or passwords.
Murray State University’s Canvas page will be down until further notice.
UPDATE: As of May 8, Murray State University’s Canvas has been restored.
