Editorial Policies

The Murray State News is a student-produced news organization on the campus of Murray State University. The News consists of these products: a digital-first publication housed on theMurrayStateNews.org and theNews.org websites, podcasts, multimedia, social media, a monthly print tabloid-sized publication, and specialty publications such as Gateway magazine and Racer Guide.

The News strives to inform students of news across campus, throughout the community and across the globe; feature organizations, professors, students or events, making the campus unique and serve as a forum for students to voice their opinions. The News is not the public relations tool for the University. The news organization is run by students, who assign and write stories, take photographs, produce podcasts and/or audio pieces, produce multimedia pieces, design pages for print and web editions, produce social media content, produce graphics and sell advertising. Student editors have the authority to make all content decisions without censorship or advance approval. A journalism faculty member makes suggestions, but editorial decisions are made by an editorial board composed of students. In addition, The News provides a hands-on learning environment for students interested in journalism.

Advertising Deadlines

All space reservations for display and classified advertisements are due no later than noon Monday. Ad creatives and classified copy are due by noon on Monday the week of publication. Please review Advertising Policies for acceptable content.

Letters to the Editor

The Murray State News welcomes Letters to the Editor. Timely, well-written opinions on topics of interest by MSU student and faculty are given first priority for publication.

The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to edit or reject letters that contain libelous statements, hate language, or for clarity, brevity, good taste and accuracy. All submissions become the property of The News and cannot be returned (if sent by mail).

Please limit submissions to 300 words. Submissions are due each week by Sunday at 5 p.m.

Writers must include full first and last name, address, year in school or position at the university (if applicable) and a phone number. Contact information will not be published. Anonymous submissions automatically will be rejected.

Opinions expressed in letters, columns, or commentaries are solely the opinion of the author and not necessarily the opinion of the staff of The Murray State News or MSU.
