The News reached out to Murray Police Department asking for details of what happened at Sigma Pi on Nov. 25 before Thanksgiving. Capt. Andrew Wiggins, community services commander, said the house’s location was out of the city limits, and they would not be the primary agency. Wiggins suggested The News to Calloway County instead.
As of that day, Calloway said they’ve not received a report of any kind.
” … there has been no report of this incident to the Calloway County Sheriff’s office,” Marian Cosgrove, public information officer, said. “If that changes, I will let you know.”
However, on Dec. 1, a student replied to an inquiry from The News to talk about the assault at Pike. Lissa Bennett, a junior nursing major, said she was inside the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house when she and her friends heard a commotion.
“This huge group of people just started running out of the house,” Bennett said. “We assumed there was a fight, so we decided to stay inside, but we were by a window that looked right outside of the front door, so we decided to pull the curtain back and look. We just saw a huge crowd of people, and then cops started pulling up, and a brother came up and shut the curtain, and we asked him what was going on, and he basically told us to ‘hold on,’ went up to the front and told everybody to ‘stay inside or stay in the backyard. Nobody is allowed to leave for the time being.'”
Bennett said she and her friends, standing in the fenced-in backyard, didn’t see much other than “a lot of police.”
“Just normal things that you would see when something like this happens, (but), I mean, nothing about this is normal,” Bennett said. ” … A lot of people were just running around trying to figure out how to get the hell out of there.”
Bennett said she heard after the fact that the assault involved men who are not from Murray State University, however, she said this information was from YikYak, where it has also been circulated as a rumor the men were also from out of town.
