The Murray State Racers traveled to Jacksonville, Alabama, falling to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 45-10 on Sep. 20.
The start of the game lacked action, and the first on the board was the Racers with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. Graduate student Jack Tannehill kicked a 43-yard field goal after seven plays and 29 yards, giving Murray State an early lead of 3-0. With 1:32 left in the first quarter, the Gamecocks scored a touchdown after seven plays and 75 yards. The extra point was good, allowing Jacksonville State to take over the lead 7-3.
In the second quarter, the Gamecocks were the first to score, with a 27-yard field goal at 11:02 left in the half. This field goal was after 12 plays and 63 yards, making the score 10-3 for Jacksonville State. Both teams stayed strong on their defense in the quarter, but Jacksonville State managed a touchdown with 1:25 remaining in the second quarter, which was scored after 10 plays and 69 yards. The extra point was good, giving the Gamecocks a 17-3 lead. With just 13 seconds left in the half, the Gamecocks scored another touchdown. This was after four plays and 43 yards, and the extra point was good, making the score 24-3 going into halftime.
After halftime, Murray State was first on the scoreboard with a touchdown. This was possible after Jacksonville State got pushed back five yards, where they fumbled, which was recovered by Murray State redshirt freshman Conlee Crossno for the Racer’s only touchdown of the game. Tannehill’s kick for the extra point was good, making the score 24-10 with 9:46 remaining in the third quarter. With 6:08 left in the third quarter, the Gamecocks got a touchdown after nine plays and 84 yards, making the lead 31-10. With only six seconds left before the fourth quarter, Jacksonville State scored another touchdown, after 10 plays and 72 yards, making the Gamecocks lead 38-10.
Both the Racers and the Gamecocks were unsuccessful in scoring for most of the fourth quarter, but the Gamecocks did manage one last touchdown with 1:15 remaining in the ball game. Jacksonville State got this touchdown after seven plays and 72 yards, and the extra point was good. This final touchdown made the final score a 45-10 win for the Jacksonville Gamecocks.
The Racers have week five off, but will travel to Vermillion, South Dakota, to play the University of South Dakota on Oct. 4. This game will kick off at 2 p.m.
