Murray State Racers football traveled to Atlanta Georgia on Sep. 13, and fell short to Georgia State University with a loss of 37-21.
Georgia State was the first on the board with 7:26 in the first quarter. Georgia State had a one-yard run, and the extra point was good for an early 7-0 lead. With 2:47 left in the first, Georgia State has another touchdown from a five-yard run after nine plays and 63 total yards. This bought the lead up to 14-0 over Murray State.
The Racers got on the board early in the second quarter when senior Jawaun Northington rushed five yards and scored a touchdown with 13:51 left in the half. This touchdown was successful after 10 plays and 75 yards. Later in the second quarter, redshirt freshman Jim Ogle was pushed back into Georgia State’s scoring endzone, where he dumped the ball off to redshirt sophomore Darius Cannon who was then tackled inside the end zone for a two point safety for Georgia State. This made the lead 16-7 for the Panthers. With only 48 seconds left in the second quarter, Georgia State rushed one yard and scored another touchdown. The score going into halftime was 23-7.
The only action in the third quarter was another touchdown for Georgia State, with 3:04 remaining in the quarter. This was a 16-yard run, and the extra point was good. This made the score 30-7.
Murray State was the first on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, scoring a touchdown with 12:50 remaining in the game. Ogle’s pass was completed to graduate student Lucas Desjardins for four yards. The extra point was not successful, making the score 30-13. With 7:07 remaining in the fourth, Georgia State scored their final touchdown of the game, making the score 37-13. The Racers got themselves one last touchdown with 1:55 left in the game, when Redshirt freshman Baxter Wright rushed for three yards. The Racers went for a two point conversion attempt, Wright stepped back to pass, and redshirt freshman Tyrell Campbell completed the pass for a successful two point attempt.
The final score was 37-21, making the Racers record on the season 0-3 going into week four. Murray State will travel to Alabama to play Jacksonville State on Sep. 20, kickoff is at 6 p.m.
