The Student Government Association announced the results of its freshman senator election and passed a new amendment to decide new voter designation.
Out of 11 candidates, Parker Johnson won first place with 31% of the votes. Hannah Murphy took second, holding 14% of the votes. The two winners will serve alongside other members of SGA in the Student Senate, representing their respective demographic.
Each year two vacancies are made in the Senate for these two positions, giving freshmen the opportunity to be represented when discussing legislation. Freshman senators also serve as co-chairs for the Freshman Council, which serves as an outlet for them to report any concerns or plan events geared towards freshmen.
The amendment to be voted on, would determine if Murray State students taking at least one course at the University could participate in elections. It would not extend to RacerAcademy students, faculty or staff.
With 86% of the vote in favor, the amendment was passed.
“It’s great, honestly, I’m happy it went through the proper process,” Ali Khatib, SGA president, said. “I don’t think (the newly passed amendment) will affect SGA too much.”
