Murray State is entering week three of the 2024 season 0-2. Fortunately, history is on their side in week three as Mississippi Valley State comes to town Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils are an FCS football team from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. They are currently 0-2 on the season, losing to Tennessee State and Lamar University. They finished last season 1-10 with their only win coming against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on their homecoming.
The Sept. 14 matchup will be the third all-time meeting between these two teams. The last meeting between them resulted in a Racer win 35-0 over the Delta Devils during the 2021 season. The first meeting between the two came in 2011, which saw Murray State win 39-0 in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
The Delta Devils are averaging 17.5 points per game this season, scoring 21 against Tennessee State and 14 against Lamar. Of the five touchdowns they have scored this season, four of those have come through the passing game. Sophomore quarterback Jaydyn Sisk has thrown a touchdown pass in each of the team’s first two games.
Mississippi Valley State has also made use of three quarterbacks. Sisk has seen the most action, sophomore Ty’Jarian Williams has played snaps in both games and junior Ruben Lee saw time against Tennessee State.
Defensively, the Delta Devils are not very good. They are allowing their opponents to score 34.5 points per game, which sits them in the bottom half of their conference.
While MVSU hasn’t scored much so far, Murray State has scored even less. The Racers are averaging 8.5 points per game. They will hope that this is the week where the offense can make a breakthrough and put some points on the board.
The main contrast between these teams is their offensive identities. MVSU is looking to get the ball through the air, while Murray wants to put the ball on the ground. Both teams have struggled defensively but something will have to give when they meet.
It’s hard to predict whether the game will be a shoot-out or a defensive chess match, but one thing is for certain it’s going to be a fun game to watch. The game is slated to kickoff at 6 p.m.
