Winter Storm Fern, a mix of snow and freezing rain, is on the way with meteorologists anticipating over five inches of snow and ice. Although we cannot predict whether we will lose power or have water pipes burst, we can proactively prepare for the possibility of anything happening.
Here are five tips to make sure you are prepared for the upcoming storm.
Charge ALL of your devices
Fully charge your devices before the weather hits. Device batteries, particularly the ones in phones, drain faster in extreme temperatures. Consider buying a power bank to charge your devices if the power goes out.
Buy simple foods
If you know anything about Kentucky during a winter storm, you know of the urgency with which people buy bread, milk and eggs. If the power goes out, you need to have simple foods that do not require heating or preparation to consume, like canned soup, peanut butter or other non-perishables. While Winslow and Fast Track will remain open during the campus closure, circumstances may arise that prevent you from venturing outside. Winslow and Fast Track also have adjusted hours during the campus closure. Winslow’s hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday through Tuesday, and Fast Track’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday through Tuesday.
Leave the faucet dripping
Multiple residential colleges on campus have historically had problems with pipes freezing or bursting. Leaving the faucet dripping keeps the water flowing and prevents ice formations.
Close windows
Double-check that your windows are completely shut and locked to prevent any chilly drafts from lowering the temperature.
Use a water pitcher or stock up on water
If you have a water pitcher or another form of bottle, fill it with water. If the pipes freeze, you will need access to alternative water sources.
For the upcoming days, please use extreme caution when traveling and, when possible, enjoy the snow days that follow.
