Jennifer Riley, founder of Journey Bags, spoke at the Murray State Student Government Association to raise awareness for cancer patients at Murray-Calloway County Hospital.
Journey Bags seeks to assist those who have been recently diagnosed with cancer. To ease the emotional stress of the event, the non-profit organization assembles bags that contain resources that a patient will need during their recovery journey. This is done in hopes of removing the stress of searching for items online after a diagnosis.
“The bags are a way of connecting with our patients,” Riley said. “That’s our way of saying we love you, your community is there for you, and to lighten up the mood a little bit.”
Each bag contains different items, though usually contain headwear, queasy drops, lotion, peppermints and a blanket. For female patients, a bag may include an additional coloring book with pencils and a bracelet. Children will receive coloring books as well, along with several toys personalized to their education level.
Along with this, patients will also be given access to a directory that will help them in the future. This includes contact information and links to resources that can help them get more of these items.
Donations can be given directly through their website under the named tab. Bags can also be purchased for friends and family members, with prices ranging from $200–$75 depending on its contents. These also come with a personalized message written by the donator. Shipping fees are covered by the organization.
Journey Bags is sponsoring a vendor market called HOPE for the Holidays. This event will be held in the CFSB Center from Oct. 24 to 25. Vendors will sell a variety of handmade goods, clothing and food from nearby cities or states.
