The Racers faced Southern Illinois University for David Schwepker’s 27th season opener, losing 3-1 despite attack power from freshman Anne Makowski and junior outside hitter Alexa Watts’ 25 combined points.
The first set remained close for its entirety, both teams highlighting their own offense as the match advanced. Despite the efforts from both sides of the net, the Salukis managed to secure their lead 25-23. With the second set underway, the Racers had more difficulty scoring, profiting more from Southern Illinois’ errors rather than their own attacks. Southern Illinois was able to move past their own mistakes and took the second set 25-20.
The Racers were able to keep close with Southern Illinois following the second set, stealing back the lead multiple times throughout the third set. The Racers were able to solidify their lead by serves from senior outside hitter Nuccio Federica and kills by senior outside hitter Ella Vogel. While Southern Illinois caught up nearing the end of the set, the Racers held their own and won the set 27-25.
The fourth set began with the teams neck and neck, each team responding immediately to the other’s attacks. The Racers momentarily fell shortly behind, but the Salukis took advantage of the opportunity and continued to score, winning the set 25-19.
Despite Watts only playing in seven games this season, she has the second most kills for the Racers this season and managed to earn a season high 11 kills and 13 points. Vogel, who has the most kills for the Racers this season, had 19 kills. Makatowski also had 11 kills in only her fifth game with the Racers.
The Racers play again Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. against Drake University at Knapp Center.
