Women’s golf comes up short in season opener

The Murray State Women’s golf opening weekend event took place in Statesboro, Georgia, on Sunday, Feb. 21, and Monday, Feb.22. 

The Racers competed in the Strutter Gus Invitational where they came up short, placing 10th out of 12 teams.

Despite the lackluster showing from the Racers as a whole, sophomore Payton Carter cracked the top 20 finishers, placing 19th place with seven birdies and carding a line of 80-80-75-235. Carter was tied for third in the event of 68 players overall. Senior Raeyshan Serendran placed in 42nd on scores of 81-82-81=244 while Sophomore Ana Garcia Picchi placed 52nd, stroking 86-82-80=248. 

Junior Sarah Forsythe and freshman Briana McMinn tied in 52nd place. Forsythe swung scores of 87-83-76=246 while McMinn tallied scores of 82-84-80=246. 

Graduate student Lucila Puente Rodriguez de Austria placed 47th with scores of 84-78-84=246. Freshman Emmie Eriksson placed 66th with scores of 91-90-87=258 and senior Charli Jo Doss came in 67th on rounds of 92-82-87=261. 

The Murray State women’s golf team will compete next in Kiawah Island,South Carolina, from Sunday, Feb. 28, to Tuesday, March 2, against the College of Charleston.
