’Breds win first two OVC games

In its first two conference games, the Murray State baseball team moved back above a .500 record by earning a pair of wins in the double-header against Morehead State.

After having to delay the series twice due to poor field conditions caused by weather earlier in the week, the ’Breds earned similar victories over the Eagles with a 10-4 margin in the first game and 9-5 in the second.

The teams will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Monday at Reagan Field.

Game 1

Murray State fell behind by a run in the first inning due to a throwing error.

A solo home run by the Eagles’ Nick Newell put the ’Breds down by two in the third, but Murray State tied the game in the bottom half of the frame after a pair of Morehead State errors.

Good offense in the fifth and sixth innings allowed the ’Breds to take a comfortable 6-3 lead into the final third of the game.

Though the Eagles added one more run in the eighth, Murray State responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, sealing the win.

Murray State senior Cameron Finch (1-1) earned the win from the mound after allowing three runs on five hits in seven innings. Sophomore Cody Maerz came away with the save, allowing one run and three hits in two innings.

Game 2

The first three innings were uneventful for both teams, as neither was able to get a runner across the plate.

After scoring one run in the fifth inning, the ’Breds’ offense put the game out of reach in the sixth. The team drew six straight walks before senior Ty Stetson drove in a pair with a single up the middle. The hit was the 200th of his career.

The Eagles made some noise in the eighth inning by putting up three runs, but Murray State earned two more to answer.

Morehead State earned two more in the final inning, but the lead proved to much to overcome, giving the ’Breds the win.

Junior Brock Downey (3-0) picked up the victory, allowing six hits in seven scoreless innings and striking out six.
