Following student feedback on Einstein Bros. Bagels’ new in-store ordering system, Richard Weigel, the resident district manager of Sodexo Campus Services, spoke to The Murray State News about the original goal for the change and the intent going forward.
Weigel began working on Murray State’s campus at the beginning of the spring 2026 semester. He said the GrubHub kiosks at Einstein were implemented before he arrived and he did not anticipate the issues students have experienced.
“How much feedback did they get? I don’t have a clue,” Weigel said. “I wish I did, but obviously, it has adversely affected a lot of people. My sincere apologies for that. I know that wasn’t the intent.”
Weigel said Sodexo Campus Services meant to combat the “excessive amount of time” it took Einstein employees to handwrite orders and “in no way” intended to remove customer interaction.
“It did affect that one-on-one relationship with us and the customer,” he said. “I like having that customer contact, and I know our company likes to have that because it’s important.”
Weigel said he is trying to fix Einstein’s ordering system while keeping both efficiency and customer-employee relationship in mind. He and Cynthia Parrish, a food operations manager of Sodexo Campus Services, met with the head floor manager of Einstein Bros. Bagels to discuss the best ways to move forward.
“If we didn’t engage (campus restaurant employees) before, shame on us,” he said. “Those are the people that we need to engage before we make a change in service.”
Weigel said changes cannot be made overnight, but when one is made, it will be for the benefit of all Einstein customers.
“My philosophy is we’re here to serve you,” Weigel said. “Without you, we’re not here.”
