Fashion and couture Designer Ramona Sonin featured her show “Tulle” in the Clara M. Eagle Gallery, showcasing her passion for creating sustainable and wearable art.

Sonin’s show exhibits various couture drawings and a mixture of half- and full-form wearable art pieces, including her pieces Gilda Lily and Ophelia II. Sonin said she goes out of her way to reutilize old tulle and fabric.

I’m huge in sustainability; it’s important to me,” Sonin said. “I really do try to take these scraps and then elevate them into something that is considered couture.”

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Sonin spent some time in Venice Beach, California, where she taught at the Art Institute of California. After returning to Memphis, Sonin, upon discovering the University of Memphis lacked a fashion design program, decided to write up the program herself.

Sonin explored how crucial it is to surround yourself with the things that bring you inspiration. Her art studio, which she shares with fellow artist and husband Greely Myatt, is her crafting paradise, where her environment kick-starts her artistic process.

“As you know, as creatives and as artists, the space that surrounds you is so important in your creative process,” Sonin said. “It’s really important for me that my environment is me and that I’m happy in it.”

When it comes to fashion, Sonin says her interest in the industry began as early as five years old, when her mother bought her a pair of white go-go boots.

“I was never the same after, seriously, I had my white go-go boots, and I went everywhere with them,” Sonin said. “There was something about fashion from a very, very, very young age and something about textiles that I loved.”

Sonin’s works have been featured internationally at the World Fashion Exhibition in Paris, France, in the Davenport Regional Gallery in Tasmania, Australia, and on the runway at the 2023 Australian Wearable Art Festival. Sonin’s work will also be featured in the World Fashion Exhibition tour, which will visit China, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, France and the USA.
