The Murray State soccer team traveled to Jacksonville State University on Friday, March 19, where the Racers took their first loss of the 2021 season. The Gamecocks took the 2-1 win over the Racers.

Jacksonville State was quick to jump on the offense as redshirt freshman forward Ida Cedarburg scored off of a pass from sophomore forward Gabriel Clarke in the first minute of the game, putting the Gamecocks up 1-0.

The Gamecocks’ advantage continued through the halftime whistle. It wasn’t until minute 7 of the second half that the Racers tied the game 1-1 when freshman forward Chloe Barnthouse put the ball in the net after a deflected shot from redshirt junior midfielder Symone Cooper.

Just 10 minutes later, Jacksonville State was able to regain the lead when sophomore forward Cynthia Bagozzi put the ball past Murray State’s sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Villacres to bring the score to 2-1, the final score of the game.

Murray State was able to put up nine second-half shots against Jacksonville State. Barnthouse generated a team-high four shots on the day and led the Racer offense with one goal.

Villacres led the defense with a season-high seven saves against the Gamecocks.

The Racers will return to Cutchin Field on Tuesday, March 23, when they host Tennessee Tech University with a 3 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
