As winter is approaching, so is the season of sickness.

Here are some ways students can protect themselves during the winter season.

Murray State Health Services officials said there has been an increase in coronavirus and upper respiratory cases on campus, along with the common cold.

Staying hydrated is key.

According to Murray State Health Services, the body needs to be filled with vitamins and minerals through plant-based nutrition.

Hydration assists in retaining those vitamins and minerals.

Hygiene is also extremely important to maintain your health.

Make sure to cough or sneeze in your elbow, as well as consistently wash your hands to avoid the spread of germs.

Consistent hand washing is important to avoid spreading any illnesses that may be transferred by contact.

Murray State Health Services recommends washing your hands for 20 seconds or more with soap and water in order to limit the spread of any germs.

Listening to your body is one of the most important things you can do.

If you feel sick, stay home to avoid spreading anything to others.

It is often difficult to determine the difference between allergy symptoms and COVID-19, according to Murray State Health Services.

Be sure to limit exposure to large groups of people, especially if it is a more vulnerable group. Brayden Bass, freshman civil engineering major, said he stays inside to avoid spreading any illnesses, takes medication when necessary and wears a mask when he is in public.

Abby Farris, freshman education major, said she takes vitamins daily to strengthen her immune system so she has a lower chance of getting sick.
