The Student Government Association opened its weekly meeting with discussion about the Higher Education Rally held Tuesday in Frankfort, Ky.
SGA president Jeremiah Johnson said the rally was a huge success and about 400 students were in attendance, making the rally the largest in its history.
Johnson said Murray State brought more students to the rally this year than ever before, with about 40 students in attendance.
Upcoming University events include the Presidential lecture featuring James Carville and Mary Matalin, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in Lovett Auditorium. Prior to the lecture will be a news conference at 6:30 p.m. in Pogue library.
Josh Jacobs, the University president’s chief of staff, said spring enrollment numbers are in and they are up from spring 2011.
“We might 12,000 students by fall 2012,” Jacobs said. “Our goals for recruitment and retention are working very well.”
Jacobs said he hopes the SGA will discuss the topic of the library project and students fees in upcoming meetings.
Don Robertson, vice president of Student Affairs, said building the new library would benefit the campus by making Waterfeild library a one-stop student center.
“I don’t want Waterfeild to get lost in a discussion,” Robertson said. “There will be lots of positive things if we move forward.”
There will be no senate next week due to the Racer basketball game against Southeast Missouri State University.
