Following the rough outing at the Eastern Kentucky University Intercollegiate, the Murray State Racers made some headway, placing 12 out of 18 in the Derek Dolenc Invitational

After the first day of play on Monday, Sept. 23, senior Austin Knight found himself in a nine-way tie for ninth place. Knight, who couldn’t compete in the previous tournament due to illness, wasted no time in re-asserting himself as an elite golfer and a leader for his team. He finished the day with a 141.

Sophomore Dalton Bagwell finished the day in 32nd place shooting 147, and freshman Walker Beck cracked the top 70 golfers, scoring 153 and coming in 67th. It was Beck’s first time participating for the Racers not as an individual, but as a representative of the team’s overall placement.

Senior Avery Edwards and junior Connor Coombs tied for 77th place, both shooting 155.

Golfing as an individual for the Racers was sophomore James Boone, who finished 53rd after the first day, shooting 150. By the end of the day, the Racers were in 13th place.

The Racers closed the gap the following morning, finishing 12th and shooting 891 total after three rounds of play. The University of Tennessee at Martin took first place with a score of 852.

Knight still scored in the top 20 of the 99 golfers. He finished the event shooting 216, coming in at 19th place. Bagwell was just behind, shooting 218 and placing 25th. Edwards shot 230 and placed 64th. Coombs and Beck both achieved 70th place, mirroring scores of 231.

Boone managed to squeeze into the top 60, keeping pace with a 228 and finishing 58th overall.

The Racers will get into the swing of the season at the Skyhawk Classic on Monday, Sept. 30, in Buchanan, Tennessee.
