Men win season opener

The home opener for the men’s basketball team proved successful as the Racers won 97-69 over the Brescia Bearcats Tuesday.

The win marks the 24th consecutive victory on opening night. Several players also scored career highs, making it a night for the record books.

Early buckets from freshman Cameron Payne, senior Dexter Fields and junior Jarvis Williams pushed the team to a 17-7 lead less than five minutes into the game.

A pair of free throws by Williams with 8:27 to play in the first half gave Murray State a double-digit lead that did not falter for the rest of the game.

Sophomore Jeffrey Moss hit a jumper just before the half to give them a halftime lead of 47-31.

A baseline drive and dunk from sophomore C.J. Ford gave the team a 20-point lead at 61-41.

The Racers dominated the boards and the glass against the Bearcats. Murray State pulled down 40 rebounds and shot 60 percent, while Brescia only earned 25 and shot 43 percent.

Moss led the team with 21 points, while Fields added 20 and Ford scored 15. Williams recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

It was a career high for all four players.

The Racers play again at 6 p.m. Friday at Old Dominion.
