Alumnus serves nation’s first openly LGBT U.S. senator

Will Hansen, Murray State alumnus, has joined United States Senator Tammy Baldwin’s team as her Legislative Director.

After serving seven terms in the United States House of Representatives representing Wisconsin’s Second Congressional District, Baldwin was elected to the Senate in 2012 as the first openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) member.

Hansen joins Baldwin’s Senate team after serving as the Executive Director of the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee.  As the Executive Director, Hansen oversaw all activities of the Committee’s work and U.S. Senator Robert Casey’s Chairmanship of the committee. Hansen also previously worked as Legislative Counsel to Senator Casey.

Before working on Capitol Hill, Hansen was an Associate Attorney at McDermott Will & Emery LLP in the Washington, DC office.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in International Business from Murray State University and received a joint JD/LL.M degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois.

Hansen also serves on the University’s LGBT Programming Advisory Committee where he represents alumni.
