Ren receives URSA travel support grants

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity  has awarded a Travel Support Grant in the amount of $200 to Sijin Ren.  Travel Support Grants are intended to support undergraduate students accepted to present research at a professional conference or gathering.

Sijin Ren, a junior chemistry major in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, awarded for her upcoming presentation entitled “Intermolecular Interactions Between Each of Uracil and Adenine with Reactive Oxygen Species.”  Her research concerns a computational study of intermolecular interactions between each of uracil and adenine with the superoxide anion and the hydroxyl radicals.

Such interactions can cause damage to the DNA and RNA molecules, which may lead to serious diseases. The outcomes of her research may play future roles in identifying medicines for prevention and/or repair damaged DNA and RNA molecules. Her presentation will be at the American Chemical Society National Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans, LA, April 7-11, 2013.

Ren is from Liaoning, China. Dr. Wafaa Fawzy, assistant professor of chemistry, serves as mentor to Ren for her research.  Fawzy will be participating in the conference with Ren.
