Murray State soccer beat Southern Alabama 1-0 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field.

Freshman forward Taylor Stevens scored the lone goal for the Racers (2-5-0) with 1.3 seconds left in the first overtime period. Stevens took a pass from freshman forward Megg Hudson inside the box and blasted it into the back of the net for her first goal as a Racer.

“We were just fighting it out (in overtime),” Stevens said. “We got it in the corner and it was just bouncing around and everything and I just struck it and it went in.”

The win over South Alabama (5-4-1) gave the Racers a weekend sweep and their second victory of the season.

Head Coach Beth Acreman said this weekend’s home series was a big momentum boost as the team begins OVC play.

“We’re just trying to get them to understand you’ve got to fight for 90 minutes and going into an extra time game and getting that goal was really pretty big,” Acreman said. “It showed that we are mentally tough enough now to withstand what’s coming in the OVC.”

Freshman goalkeeper Latisha Stevenson had seven saves and recorded her second straight shut out against the Jaguars. The Racers were out shot 20-15 and both teams had seven shots on goal.

“I challenged them to be mentally tough because we’ll need it going into the OVC next week and I couldn’t ask any more of Taylor to bang it into the back of the net,” Acreman said.

The Racers begin the first of three road OVC games Sept. 23 when they visit Austin Peay. Kick off is 1 p.m.
