Murray State traveled to Jonesboro, Arkansas to compete in the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate, hosted by Arkansas State University on Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The Racers tied for 11th place out of the 15 universities that competed, they finished with scores of 289-292-297=878.
Murray State redshirt sophomore Rocco Zakutney led the Racers with a 70-71-73 card. His final of 214 strokes was tied for 21st place among the competitors in the event.
Racers senior Jay Nimmo finished tied for 40th with a card of 74-71-74=219. Murray State sophomore Lennon Albans finished with a card of 74-74-72=220 to tie for 45th.
Murray State senior Trey Lewis had a card of 71-78-78=228 and tied for 67th. Racers senior Kamaren Cunningham finished 73-76-80=229 and junior Jakob Wellman totaled 77-76-78=231.
The Racers look onward, as they host their annual home event, The Buddy, on Monday, Oct. 14 and Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Kentucky. Eleven teams, including Murray State, will compete in the 54-hole event.
Murray State finished fourth in the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate last year and faced a decline this season. The Racers will attempt to avoid repeating the offense in The Buddy this year, as they finished fourth in the event last year as well.
The Buddy is held in honor of Murray State golf and football coach, Raymond “Buddy” Hewitt. Hewitt is a member of the Murray State Hall of Fame, as he coached the football team for a brief stint from 1947-1949 and the men’s golf team from 1961-2001.
