Continuing their streak of success, the Racers claimed a 5-2 victory against the Belmont Bruins on April 10 to mark their 15th straight win in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) matches over the last two seasons. The team celebrated two seniors, Paola Campigotto and Maggie Smith, in their Senior Day festivities to honor their hard work and collegiate contribution.
The day began with doubles wins from partners freshman Bruna Melato and sophomore Valeria Chaikovskaia and duo Campigotta and sophomore Varvara Alexeyeva, which resulted in the Racers claiming the doubles point early.
Four Racers were able to score wins against their single opponents in straight sets, while Chaikovskaia improved her record to 26-8 for the season. Despite winning her first set 6-3, Yu Kikawa could not find success against the Bruins, falling 5-7 in the second set, 12-10 in the tie-breaker third set. This loss ended her 4-0 MVC win streak.
The Racers now have a 12-6 overall record, and sit 5-0 in the MVC. The team is only three matches away from the MVC Championship Tournament, and they each are against MVC opponents.
The Racers will travel to Springfield, Missouri, on Sun. April 13, to face the Missouri State Bears.
