Six days after Steve Prohm “stepped down” as Murray State’s head men’s basketball coach, Murray State has hired the next coach to lead the prestigious program.
Former Creighton University assistant coach Ryan Miller will be the 18th head coach in Murray State men’s basketball program history, according to a report by Pete Thamel of ESPN. This is his first career head coaching job. Both Prohm and former coach Carlisle Cutchin served two stints as head coach.
Miller has been an assistant at Creighton since 2021. He was a large part of why the Bluejays brought in the No. 7 recruiting class in his first year, led by three members of the Big East Conference All-Freshman team. Creighton has only missed the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament one year since joining the staff. Their best season finish came in 2023 when the Bluejays made it to the Elite Eight..
Before his time at Creighton, Miller was an assistant at TCU, UNLV, Auburn, New Mexico, Pepperdine and Memphis. He has coached in seven NCAA tournaments, won five regular-season titles and one conference championship.
While he is used to winning basketball games, he is also regarded as one of the best recruiters in the country. He helped recruit current NBA players such as Desmond Bane, Derrick Jones and Rashad Vaughn. He was on the UNLV staff that brought in the No. 5 and No. 11 recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015, respectively.
Miller already has a tie to Murray State as well. His brother, 17 year NBA veteran Mike Miller, is former Murray State and current Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant’s agent.
Miller was selected from a reported pool that also included former Murray State and current Dayton assistant coach James Kane and current Auburn associate head coach and son of Bruce Pearl, Steven Pearl.
An official announcement by the Murray State Athletic Department is expected soon.
