The second half of the season began for the Murray State women’s golf team, as they traveled to compete on Feb. 10-11 in the Rust Buster Match Play at the King’s Ridge Country Club course in Clermont, Florida.
The Racers entered the event as the fourth seed and were able to top the fifth-seeded University of Akron in a 3-3 tiebreaker. Murray State sophomore Ella Scherer helped the team get the win after she birdied on the last two holes. Murray State then put up a fight but fell short in the semifinals to the top-seeded University of Nebraska Omaha 4-2 to finish day one.
On day two of the tournament, Murray State went up against the University of Toledo in a match for third place. The Racers were able to secure third place in the tournament in a 3.5-1.5 win after points by graduate student Eliza Mae Kho, freshman Tina Von Arx and freshman Elin Tynan and half a point from sophomore Patti Patterson.
“I am pleased with the progress we made over the three matches here in Florida and with our improvement since the semester began,” Murray State head coach Philip Nelson said. “To win two of three matches, one very handily, and then take a good Omaha team down to the end was a great start to the spring. These girls showed a lot of toughness and aggression and they are developing quickly. It’s a great feeling to have our team playing this well early in the spring.”
Murray State will travel to Phoenix, Arizona, next to compete in the GCU Invitational held on Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Grand Canyon University Golf Course.
