WKMS’s HD-3 station, or WKMS Music, which has been a music streaming station since its creation, will receive a revamp that will incorporate student production into the mix.
For the last eight years, WKMS Music has offered listeners a 24-hour mix of adult alternative/indie music and locally produced music shows. With the incorporation of student production, WKMS offers students the opportunity to try their hand at radio broadcasting and production.
Asia Burnett, WKMS station manager, said student DJ-ing is a new area for the station but one that she believes might lead to potential designated time slots.
“This will help us provide new experiences for students of all majors,” Burnett said. “Make the station more accessible for students to listen to and feel ownership in, and help us find new potential hosts for long-term music shows.”
The student production section of WKMS Music is planned for Thursdays and Fridays at 10 p.m., but Burnett said that may evolve as they gauge student interest.
For the concept’s first semester, the experience will require a significant amount of training and work from WKMS and the students involved, leading to the opportunity to be a volunteer/unpaid internship.
“Hosting a radio show can be a lot more work than someone would imagine,” Burnett said. “But we can help with vocal coaching, learning how to use recording equipment, editing software and more.”
WKMS will host an information meeting, ‘Radio 101,’ on 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 on the 8th Floor of Fine Arts for anyone interested in the internship/volunteer opportunity.
