Coming off of a three-game win streak, Murray State had the momentum to give the top-seeded conference team Drake University Bulldogs a run for their money but fell short.
Murray State entered the matchup in fourth place in the MVC, an improvement from a few weeks ago when they were hovering around seventh place.
Both teams scored in the conference matchup, as the first goal came from a penalty kick by Drake senior forward Emma Nagel in the 28th minute. Nagel’s successful penalty kick was the only goal scored in the first half.
Murray State sophomore forward Sydney Etter tied things up in the 61st minute to give the Racers their first goal. Sophomore midfielder Mary Hardy earned the assist on Etter’s goal.
The tie between the two teams was short lived, as Drake sophomore forward Kendall Starcevich scored in the 63rd minute. Freshman midfielder Angela Guitierrez earned the assist on Starcevich’s goal.
The Racers were unable to score again and lost 2-1. They fell to an overall record of 5-8-4 and a conference record of 3-2-4. The Bulldogs improved to an overall record of 11-3-3 and a conference record of 7-1-1.
Murray State committed six fouls and attempted five corner kicks, as Drake committed 15 fouls and attempted three corner kicks.
The Racers attempted 10 shots against the Bulldogs, one of which was on goal. That lone shot on goal was on Etter’s score in the 61st minute of the match. Graduate student goalkeeper Jenna Villacres played all 90 minutes for the Racers, saving four goals and allowing two.
