Conference plays starts this weekend as Murray State plays in its inaugural Missouri Valley Football Conference game against Indiana State.
Setting the record straight
The Racers enter Saturday’s game at 1-2 this season, with losses to University of Louisville and Middle Tennessee State University, two FBS opponents.
The Sycamores travel to Murray, Kentucky. They are 0-3 entering the matchup, with losses to Eastern Illinois University, the University of Indiana, and Ball State University.
Indiana State leads the series 5-4. Murray State has won the last two games in 2005 and 2006. At Roy Stewart Stadium, the Racers have won three of the four matchups.
Keys to the Game
Indiana State’s defense has struggled all season, giving up 113 points in the first three games. The defense has given up 725 passing yards and 596 rushing yards. After seeing how the Racers have used the run games far this season, their rushing offense might be the difference maker.
For the Sycamores, it’s all about moving the ball. They’ve rushed for 277 yards and passed for 294 yards, scoring two touchdowns total this season. If Indiana State is able to get the ball moving downfield, the game could come down to the wire.
Player to watch
Junior running back Cortezz Jones has led the way in rushing for the Racers, rushing for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including one against Middle Tennessee State. If the Racers’ rushing gets going, Jones may be the one leading the charge.
Senior wide receiver Dakota Carton has been the go-to receiver for the Sycamores this season, hauling in 11 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown. No matter which quarterback the Sycamores send onto the field, Carton will be there to make a catch.
Where to watch
The Racers host the Sycamores at Roy Stewart Stadium at 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. Fans can watch from home on ESPN+.
