Murray State’s women’s soccer team had a nail-biter against Florida Atlantic University on Friday, with sophomore forward Rebecca Kubin scoring her first goal of the season within the final second to put the Racers up 3-2.
“It’s a testament to our character as a team,” Lodges said. “Obviously Becca Kubin has been going through a little bit of, well I wouldn’t say a rough patch because she’s been playing really well. She just hasn’t finished her chances. Today she came up big with one second left.”
Murray State took an early lead in the 2nd minute when junior forward Miyah Watford crossed a ball into a crowded box, where one of FAU’s own knocked the ball passed the goalkeeper.
After gaining the lead, the Racers possesed the ball for the majority of the first half. They struck again in the 40th minute with a shot from sophomore midfielder Allyson McAtamney after a pass from sophomore Kayla Travis for her first career goal.
“The thing I said at the start of the season is if you are playing well that week then you are going to find yourself on the field,” Lodge said. “Allyson McAtamney had a great week of training, I think it’s a testament to her that she got her chance and she took it.”
Murray State headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead, but shortly after the start of the second half the Racers were called for a handball in their own box. The Owls capitalized on the penalty kick, and cut Murray State’s lead in half 2-1.
Shortly after the goal, the teams were ushered into the locker rooms for a lighting delay. After a thirty minute delay FAU attacked and caused one of Murray State’s defenders to deflect the ball into its goal.
After another rain delay in the 71st minute of the game, both teams scrambled to find a way to get an advantage over one another. It wasn’t until the very last second of the game where Kubin broke away from FAU defenders and slotted one past the keeper to claim the 3-2 victory
“At the end I just heard the countdown and I thought, ‘this is my time’,” Kubin said.
Murray State will play its next game against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 7 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
