The Student Government Association declared Ali Khatib the winner of the SGA presidential election by two votes over the incumbent Brendan Hawkins.
The official numbers are Khatib at 495 votes to Hawkins at 493. The vote was split 50% to 50%. Director of Election Ways and Means Nate Hunt said this is an unprecedented result.
“From what (SGA) can find in previous election results, we’ve never had an election this close,” Hunt said. “I would definitely say this is historical.”
Hawkins declined to comment on the election results at this time.
Khatib thanks his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, as well as his friends and family. He also thanked his running mates, Raeya Burton, Cameron Wright and Levi Lucas.
“I had an amazing time campaigning and I’m happy that I finally have the privilege to represent all students on campus,” Khatib said. “Thank you, Murray State.”
Khatib also thanked his voters on his personal Instagram story, with a picture of his winning election results.
“Insane 2 vote W love yall,” Khatib said.
