The Murray State women’s basketball team soared over Indiana State University 109-70 on Friday night to take their first ever Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular season title. The Racers wrapped up their historic season leading the nation with an average of 87.7 points per game.
Although the Racers had a substantial 11-point lead at the half, a 35-11 third quarter lead by seniors Katelyn Young and Ava Learn left the audience without question of who was in control of the court.
Young topped the stats sheet with 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists in her last regular season game at Murray State. She now sits with 2,946 career points, which places her 18th all-time in Division 1 scoring history.
Sophomore guard Haven Young contributed 17 points along with 12 rebounds and five assists, while Learn scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore Halli Pook finished 11 points and eight assists, and Trinity White scored nine points, which were all from three-point shots. Junior Briley Pena picked up seven points, while freshmen Jada Cook, Braxcynn Baker, Grace Billington and Adalyn Koelling worked for a combined 17 points.
Despite this only being the Racers’ third year in the conference, this team did not show fear on the court. Murray State scored 62 points in the paint and had a total of 27 assists, while also making a season high of 43 field goals. The team finished 16-4 during conference play, tying the program’s current record.
Although both Murray State and Missouri State finished with the same conference record, the official NCAA Net Rating placed the Racers 56th overall, whereas Missouri State is seated at 66th.
This puts the Racers as the top overall seed in the upcoming MVC tournament which will begin on Thursday in Evansville, Indiana. The Racers will play the winner of No. 8 Valparaiso and
No. 9 Bradley at noon on Friday, March 14.
