On Monday Feb. 24, the Murray State baseball team faced off against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in their home opener.
The game got off to a slow start, going scoreless until the top of the third inning when WKU got their first and only run of the night. The solo run went unanswered until the bottom of the ninth inning when redshirt senior outfielder Dustin Mercer hit an RBI single to score junior infielder Luke Mistone, forcing extra innings.
Following an uneventful 10th and 11th inning, in the bottom of the 12th, senior infielder Carson Garner was able to get on base due to an error by the WKU secondbasemen. Garner was then able to advance to second base after a wild pitch, putting him in scoring position. Redshirt senior outfielder Dan Tauken then put up an RBI single, scoring Garner and winning the game with a walk-off for the Racers.
Final score:
Murray State – 2
Western Kentucky – 1
