The Murray State softball team traveled to Martin, Tennessee, for the Skyhawk Invitational this past weekend to play a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 14, against the Broncos of Western Michigan.
The Racers split the series with a loss in the first game and a win in the second, which brings their record to 3-3.
Murray State held a 1-0 lead in the first game until the top of the seventh inning, where Western Michigan was able to score seven runs to take a 7-1 lead. The Racers were not able to recover from this deficit in their half of the inning, causing them to lose the first of the two games.
The second game is where the Racers’ offense really stepped up, as they scored five runs in just the first three innings, the first two of which came as a result of a home run from freshman Katy Huels. She had two hits in the game and crossed the plate three times to score three of the Racers’ runs.
The team was also able to get it done on the base paths, as freshman Kenley Minor was able to get two steals, and junior Ava Ozment and senior Erin Lackey got one apiece. This allowed the Racers to get into scoring position and eventually win the game 7-5.
The Racers will travel next to Oxford, Mississippi, for the Ole Miss Classic, as the Velvet Milkman Classic has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The team will play Nicholls in the first of five games in Mississippi at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28.
