The Murray State women’s basketball team had a show-stopping weekend. Defending home court twice in three days, beating Indiana State on Friday, Jan. 24 and Evansville on Sunday, Jan. 26.
Jan. 24th – Murray State cruises to a 97-71 victory over Indiana State
With an electrifying performance from Kaitlyn Young, scoring 33 points, Murray State women’s basketball delivered a dominant performance over Indiana State. Young’s 33 points is a career milestone; it was her 10th game with 30 or more points. It also stands as her season high, highlighting her continued excellence on the court. Ava Learn added 18 points to the Racers’ total. The dynamic front court duo of Young and Learn combined for 17 rebounds as part of a team total of 37.
Other key contributors included Trinity White and Haven Ford, who both scored 11 points. Halli Poock notched eight points and dished out a team-high nine assists. In total, 10 different Racers’ scored, and the team registered 23 assists on 34 made field goals.
Murray State’s offensive power was on full display as they improved to a perfect 12-0 on the season when scoring 80 or more points. Their shooting was especially sharp from beyond the arc, as they connected on 11 three-pointers while limiting Indiana State to just 1-of-11 shooting from distance.
Jan. 26th- Racers blast Evansville 104-66, extend streak to six straight wins
Now winners of six consecutive games, the Murray State Racers delivered an impressive 104-66 victory over Evansville on Sunday, Jan 26th. With this groundbreaking win, this now puts the racers 8-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. They now average 88.8 points per game, which ranks them third in the country.
Following her 33-point performance from Friday night, Kaitlyn Young led the Racers to victory scoring 25 points and seven rebounds in just 23 minutes of play. Freshman guard Braxcynn Baker had a standout performance of her own, setting a new career-high with 18 points, including a team-best with four three-pointers.
Ava Learn was a dominant presence during this game. Recording 14 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. The offensive effort saw eight different Racers score at least seven points. Freshman guards Grace Billington and Jada Cook scored 15 combined points.
Murray State racked up 15 steals, a season-high, and blocked six shots. Trinity White led the team with four steals as the Purple Aces struggled with turnovers, committing 23 in total.
The women’s team is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. when they take on the Belmont Bruins in Nashville, Tennessee. The winner of that game will be alone on top of the Missouri Valley Conference at 9-1 in conference play.
