The case against a former Murray State student accused of throwing a lit Molotov cocktail has been continued until March 17.
Jack Epperson appeared in Calloway Circuit Court on Jan. 21 for a status hearing.
According to a Kentucky State Police (KPS) press release, Epperson threw the homemade explosive device at a group of Murray State students on Sorority Row on Sept. 10, 2022. He was then arrested and charged with possession of a destructive/booby trap device, two counts of first-degree attempted assault and second-degree wanton endangerment.
Epperson was indicted on both state and federal charges.
On July 15, 2024, Epperson and his attorney, Jack Holland, signed a plea agreement in which Epperson agreed to a list of statements presented by the U.S. Attorney.
In part, this statement read: “Jack Thomas Epperson, upset that he was being denied the opportunity to speak to a former girlfriend, poured gasoline into a glass Starbucks bottle, inserted a wick, and then lit the wick before throwing the bottle towards a group of students gathered outside a university owned building. The Molotov cocktail did not strike any of the individuals, and burned itself out on the grass. … Experts employed by the ATF determined that the Molotov cocktail manufactured by defendant Epperson was an ‘improvised incendiary device’ and a ‘destructive device.’ This device was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.”
After pleading guilty in federal court, Epperson’s charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, a maximum fine of $10,000 and a three-year maximum term of supervised release that the court may specify, according to the Murray Ledger and Times.
Epperson has continued to have status hearings for both his state and federal charges.
Epperson’s next status hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., March 17 in Calloway Circuit Court.
