The Murray State Board of Regents voted in a special meeting on Nov. 20, to award an honorary doctorate to Aaron Thompson, Council President of Kentucky Postsecondary Education.
Faculty regent Melony Shemberger said Thompson will receive this award from Murray State during the December Commencement Ceremony.
Shemberger, Board Chairman Leon Owens and Vice Chairman Robbie Fitch spoke highly of Thompson’s accomplishments at a meeting of the honorary doctorate committee last summer.
“He’s a true champion of higher education in Kentucky,” Shemberger said. “He has helped us reconceptualize what an academic achievement can be.”
President Bob Jackson said he’s had the opportunity of working with Thompson for many years as the two of them entered their positions at almost exactly the same time, and have worked since then very closely. Jackson also said he was surprised Thompson’s resume is only 40 pages.
“He’s a distinguished educator in every respect,” Jackson said. “He’s distinguished himself in Kentucky and this country. He’s a friend of Murray State and he’s a friend to many of us personally.”
Jackson acknowledged the potentiality of Thompson watching the live-streamed event.
“Dr. Thompson, thank you for your good work in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Murray State University and beyond,” Jackson said. “I appreciate the board for taking this matter today.”
Board Regent Tom Waldrop recalls Thompson when he first joined the board three years ago. He said Thompson carried on a passion while challenging times for postsecondary education.
“I remember thinking, ‘What a passionate, articulate advocate for our education,’” Waldrop said. “I think this is a slam dunk for me. As Jon Laurent would say, ‘This is an easy lay-up.’”
Aaron Thompson will receive his fifth doctorate and speak at the 2024 December Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14 in the CFSB Center.
