The women’s basketball team fell to the University of Southern Indiana on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the annual Education Day game at the CFSB Center. The 2,713 person crowd, which was primarily filled with eager local elementary students and their teachers, set the attendance record for Murray State women’s basketball games.
The Racers ended the first quarter down 22-14. The team slowly closed the gap in the second quarter with 12 points in the paint, putting themselves in a better position to start the second half down 41-37. The Racers shot 0-8 on the three point line in the first half and scored 11 second chance points in the second quarter.
While gaining 16 points from turnovers, Southern Indiana held Murray State to seven third quarter points and took a 59-44 lead. By the fourth quarter, the Racers seemed to have found their shooting rhythm, but their effort was too little too late. Murray State scored 31 points in the final 10 minutes, but Southern Indiana was able to maintain the lead.
The Screaming Eagles took the win with a final score of 82-75. Murray State shot 28.2% from the three point line and 39.1% from the field. The team is now 1-1 for the season.
Haven Ford led the team with 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Katelyn Young also claimed her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ava Learn crashed the boards early with four rebounds in the first quarter, nine for the game. She also scored 10 points, Trinity White right behind her with eight.
The Racers will travel to Baton Rouge on Friday, Nov. 15, to play the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Champions and No. 7 ranked LSU at 7 p.m. CT.
