The Women’s Basketball team won their first official game against SIUE in dominant fashion by a score of 104-60.
The Racers played hard in the first half of the game. The team was making almost 50% of all shots they put up. The score at halftime was 56-30.
The second half of the game was all Racers. The team were able to hold back SIUE while also going on major scoring drives, ending the game with a Racers win 104-60.
The team’s veterans led the way for the Racers, with returning players Ava Learn and Katelyn Young both scoring double-doubles. The Racers also shined on the defensive side, forcing 27 turnovers in their favor and rebounding the ball 42 times.
Head coach Rechelle Turner spoke highly of her sophomore guards Hallie Poock and Haven Ford in a post game interview, commending them for their ability to rebound the ball and get it back to their teammates for a basket. Ford and Poock together totaled 13 shot assists during the game, helping the team total of 28 assists on 38 made baskets.
“It’s a ‘we over me’ basketball team,” Turner said. “They don’t care who gets the credit as long as we can win games.”
With the first win of the season under their belts, the Racers look to next Tuesday, Nov. 12th where they will play the annual education game against University of Southern Indiana. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m.
