October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and members of Elizabeth College are doing their best to raise awareness in the community.
Elizabeth College will host a “Boobeque” today on the Old Clark lawn.
Casey Rowe, resident director at Elizabeth College, came up with the idea for the event.
“She has always wanted to put this program on since she was a (resident adviser) in Franklin but never got the opportunity,” Katie Burdick, senior from Downers Grove, Ill., said. “Now that ‘all staff’ programs have become a requirement for all the residential college staffs, she finally had a big enough support system with all of us to actually make it happen.”
The event is open to anyone that would like to attend.
“We are reaching out to invite anyone who is interested,” Burdick said. “We are being sponsored by many local businesses, such as Brothers Barbecue who will be at the event grilling fresh for our guests. We have also invited the Murray Breast Cancer Support Group.”
According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation website, “We invite members of the community to join us in supporting this amazing cause and the brave women who face this adversity, as well as their family members.”
The event was planned as an all-day event including lunch and dinner.
The Boobeque’s events include a watermelon eating contest, men’s wet t-shirt contest and other carnival festivities.
Those who cannot attend the event but would like to donate can do so at timeforresearch.org.
“Upon signing into the program you’ll get four free tickets, (with) each additional ticket costing 50 cents,” Greg Johnson, senior from Oldham County, Ky., said. “Tickets can be used toward our many activities such as a duck pond, bingo, a dunk tank, balloon darts and others.”
Lunch and dinner plates will cost $3 and drinks will be 50 cents or 1 ticket. Lunch is from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
“Prizes ranging from $15 to $60 will be raffled off every hour from sponsors like Victoria’s Secret, Vera Bradley and plenty of local stores,” Johnson said.
The goal is to raise $3,600, which in turn would fund three full days of breast cancer research.
