Emotions ran high on Wednesday when Murray State hosted the Belmont Bruins on senior night.
Despite the Racers taking a lead early in the first half, Belmont took over before halftime and never looked back, ending the seniors’ special night in heartbreak and defeating Murray State 83-61.
“This was a disappointing senior night,” Head Coach Steve Prohm said after the game. “We just weren’t very good. Our pace, our toughness. You can name a lot of things that we didn’t do well. I can name 20 things that we didn’t do well tonight. There’s a lot of pressure on senior night, and I hate this for everyone involved.”
Senior guards Rob Perry and Quincy Anderson, and senior forward Shawn Walker Jr. each got the start. Perry led the Racers in scoring with 14 points and eight rebounds, followed by Anderson with 10 points. Walker scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.
Prohm’s emotions were also elevated after the game where he commented on how the season has gone and how he feels about coaching at Murray State in the future.
“When I came here in ‘06, there was a lot of growing pain until we kicked the door down,” Prohm said. “We’re not where we need to be. But I’m passionate about coaching this place. That’s me. I’m passionate and emotional. It’s hard to do senior night the way we do it, but the great programs do it like that. There’s expectations, so yeah I’m gonna be passionate.”
Murray State falls to 12-18 overall , and finishes the year with an even 8-8 record in the CFSB Center, the first non-winning season at home for the Racers since the 1978-79 season.
With just one game remaining, Murray State has a 9-10 conference record and sits at the eight seed, with a chance of snagging the seven seed before the MVC Tournament starts on Thursday, March 7.
The Racers final game will be on the road as they head to Terre Haute, Indiana, to face the top team in the MVC, the Indiana State Sycamore. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
