In a single game on Wednesday, April 28, the Murray State softball team lost to the University of North Alabama Lions 11-0. The Racers dropped all three of their one-game non-conference series this season, with the other two losses being in extra innings.
Senior right-hander Taylor Makowski was the starting pitcher against the Lions, coming into the game with a 5-2 record. Makowski lasted just 2.1 innings in the game, striking out one batter and allowing four hits and four runs.
Showed zeros for both teams until the bottom of the third when the Lions got four runs to cross home plate. After loading the bases, right-fielder Sidney Bevis, senior first baseman Harley Stokes hit a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Lions a 4-0 lead in just the third inning.
After the grand slam, Makowsky was pulled and freshman right-hander Rachel Monroe was put in to pitch. She went 2.2 innings for the Racers, striking out one batter and allowing five hits.
The Lions continued to lay on the runs in the fifth inning. With two runners on, junior catcher Georgia Land hit a single into left field, bringing in both baserunners to extend the Lions lead to six.
The Racers put freshman outfielder Kamryn Carcich in to pitch in the sixth inning, hoping to throw the Lions off. That wasn’t the case as Bevis hit a sacrifice fly to bring a run home, extending the Lions’ lead to seven.
Following the sacrifice fly, the Lions loaded the bases once again. Then, with two outs in the inning, Land hit the Lions’ second grand slam of the game, making the score 11-0 and ending the ballgame.
The Racers dropped their second straight game and their third one-game of the season. In the game, the Racers had just four hits and one walk, striking out five times in six innings. The Racers’ pitching staff gave up 13 hits in the game, striking out just three batters total and walking four batters.
The Racers dropped to 19-26 on the season but will look to pick back up with a three-game series at SEMO, starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.
