The Murray State volleyball team will hit the road again to compete against Austin Peay State University for a two-game series on Sunday, March 7, and Monday, March 8.
Murray State used the previous weekend against UT Martin to improve their record to 4-4 overall while the Governors are sitting at a record of 6-2. The Racers are coming off a 19-11 record from last season while the Governors are coming off of an 11-20 record.
The previous match-up against the Governors on Nov. 13, 2019, resulted in a tough five-set game with the Racers winning 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-10). Murray State has won the last four matches against Austin Peay.
Two Racers, junior libero Becca Fernandez and freshman outside hitter Jayla Holcombe, are entering the upcoming match against Austin Peay as OVC Players of the Week. Holcombe counted 43 kills and six blocks in the two-game series against UT Martin, while Fernandez tallied 47 digs.
Austin Peay had one player named to the Preseason All OVC Team this season. With the Governors having a winning record so far this season (6-2), Head Coach David Schwepker said this will be a tough match for the Racers.
“Every week we just have to get a little bit better,” Schwepker said. “Austin Peay is going to be great so it will be very tough, especially since we are on the road, but that is all part of growing up as a volleyball player.”
The Racers will travel to Clarksville, Tennessee, to take on the Governors at 4 p.m. on both Sunday and Monday.
