Murray State’s women’s tennis team started its spring season with two wins over Cumberland University.
The Racers started the double header by winning the doubles point with sophomore Stasya Sharapova and junior Anja Loncarevic winning 6-2, and senior Amina Hadzic and junior Sara Loncarevic winning in a similar 6-2 fashion. The only loss in doubles came from seniors Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson, dropping their game 7-6.
To kick off singles for the Racers, Sharapova lost her first set 3-6, but came back to win the next two sets 6-0 and 6-1.
Anja Loncarevic followed Sharapova by winning a contested first set at 6-4, but outmatched her opponent in the second set winning 6-0.
Sophomore Aarja Chakraborty won her singles match with relative ease, winning 6-1, 6-1. Hadzic fought for a first set victory of 6-4, and followed that with a 6-1 win.
Masson and Sara Loncarevic both won their singles matches 6-0, 6-2.
After a break both teams played another match that day which had the Racers winning 7-0.
Murray State won all three doubles sets this time when they switched Sharapova and Anja Loncarevic to the first seed and won 6-1. Chang and Masson won their doubles set with a 6-3 mark, while Hadzic and Sara Loncarevic overmatched their opponent for the second time winning 6-1.
Anja Loncarevic stepped into the first seed and won her singles match 6-2, 6-2. Sharapova won her first set 6-1, but dropped the second set 4-6. Sharapova overcame losing in the second set to win in the tiebreaker 10-1.
Hadzic moved to the third seed and won her match 6-2, 6-3. Chakraborty switched up her seed to the fourth and won her second singles match 6-1, 6-3.
Sara Loncarevic won another singles match 6-0, 6-1. Masson would cap off the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win to end the day of play.
The Racers will continue their spring season against Lipscomb University in Aurora, Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 8.
