The Murray State volleyball team defeated the Morehead State Eagles on November 14 for their final match of the season.
This is the first time in ten years that Murray State has beat Morehead in volleyball. The team won with three sets and lead strong throughout. They will participate in the OVC Tournament on November 19-21.
They took the game with a 25-19 win in the first set, 25-16 win in the second set, and a 25-12 win in the third set. They ended this game with 38 kills, 35 assists, 11 aces, 28 digs, and a .343 hitting average.
The team also celebrated the graduating seniors Alyssa Lelm, Sam Bedard, Taylor Olden, and Emily Schmahl. The girls were excited to play their last official home game and wanted to leave by finally beating Morehead.
“We just gave it all we got,” said Taylor Olden, senior from Lincoln, Illinois. “I think it was good playing against good competition to keep our levels high for the tournament.”
Olden took the lead in the amount of kills with nine and total attempts with sixteen.
The Racers had a season they won’t forget with an overall record of 24-2. They had a total of 1298 kills, 1215 assists, 151 aces, and 1544 digs this season.
Sam Bedard, senior from Breese, Illinois, lead with the most assists this season and in this game, with twenty-eight.
“I have the hitters, and defense, and passers to able me to do that,” Bedard said. “If I didn’t have them I wouldn’t be able to set the ball.”
Bedard also had the most aces this game with a total of six. She, like the rest of the team, is excited to dominate the OVC Tournament on their home court.
Coach David Schwepker is happy to go into the tournament off this win. “Winning is the big goal, but sweeping is not even in the picture,” said Head Coach David Schwepker, “We’re just going to play solid and fearless and go out there and do what we can do.”
The Racers will play Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Racer Arena to kick off the OVC Tournament.
