Iowa State hired men’s basketball Head Coach Steve Prohm to replace former coach Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg accepted a head coaching job with the Chicago Bulls June 2. Prohm agreed to a five-year contract with a base salary of $1.5 million. The hiring was first reported by Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com before Cyclones Athletics released an official statement Monday. Prohm will be formally introduced at a press conference at 10 a.m. June 9 at the Sukup Basketball Complex in Ames, Iowa.
Prohm spent nine years with the Racers, taking over the head coach position from Billy Kennedy in the 2011-12 season and holding a 104-29 record during his four seasons in that role. He led the Racers into postseason play three of his four years as head coach, advancing into the third round of the NCAA tournament in 2012, winning the College Insider Tournament in 2014 and making it to the NIT quarterfinals in 2015.
Prohm’s first year as head coach ranks as the best in Racer basketball history, led by 76er player Isaiah Canaan. During 2011-12, the Racers set the OVC and school record for winning percentage and total wins with a 31-2 record and ranked in the top-10 in the Associated Press poll for the first time in school history.
Prohm’s departure comes not long after former Racer point guard and OVC Athlete of the Year Cameron Payne announced his intent to enter the 2015 NBA draft after his sophomore season.
Before Murray State, Prohm served on the coaching staffs at Centenary College, Southeastern Louisiana University and Tulane. A 1997 graduate of the University of Alabama, Prohm also served as a student assistant coach and student manager for the Crimson Tide.
The 40-year-old coach is married to Katie Prohm, formerly Ross, and the couple’s first child, Cass, was born earlier this year.
“We feel Steve and his family are a perfect fit for Iowa State University,” Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard told cyclones.com. “Steve’s personal values, style of play and proven success as a head coach make him an outstanding choice to be our next coach. He is a proven winner who is widely respected by his current and former players. We feel Steve is the ideal coach to continue the incredible success that Coach Hoiberg and his players have achieved during the past several years. We are excited to welcome Steve, Katie and Cass to the Cyclone family.”
Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward also released a statement Monday addressing Prohm’s move and the hiring process to occur. Little is known about the status of incoming players recruited by Prohm for the 2015-16 season.
“I want to thank Coach Prohm for a tremendous four years and wish him the best at Iowa State,” Ward said. “I have no doubt he’ll be successful with the Cyclones. He’s a class individual and represented Murray State proudly. I will always be grateful for his service. Because of the unusual timing of this move, it’s in our best interest to move very quickly to find a replacement. I’ll be visiting with Murray State President Dr. Davies this afternoon to determine our course of action. Murray State has been fortunate to have success for many years under the leadership of some of the most talented coaches in all of college basketball, this time around will be no different. It is our goal to find an individual that embodies what Murray State is all about and will embrace the expectations we have for this program. The future is bright for Racer Basketball.”

Coach Prohm is a great human being, coach and motivator. He will be missed at MSU. We will never forget the nation’s longest winning streak and trip to NCAA tournament against Marquette. Good Luck Steve
