The rifle team posted two of their highest scores so far this season over the weekend, but lost by narrow margins to both No. 7 Army and No. 1 Kentucky at West Point, N.Y.
The team squared off Friday against Army when they lost 4668-4652. Despite outshooting the Black Knights in air rifle, the Racers 24-point disadvantage in smallbore left them facing a tough loss.
Freshman Katarina Bisercic scored highest for Murray State in air rifle, posting a score of 592, only three points behind the leader. She also scored a 573 in smallbore to take seventh place overall.
After posting the team’s second-highest score of the year against Army, Murray State shot even better Saturday against rival Kentucky. Still, it was not enough to take down the nation’s top team.
Sophomore Tessa Howald led the overall scoring this time with a 578 in smallbore and a season-best 590 in air rifle.
All shooters recorded some of their highest marks for the year, making them fierce competitors against the Wildcats.
Some of the shooters will compete individually Saturday at the Withrow Invitational. Then the team prepares to face off against Morehead State Jan. 27 in Lexington, Ky.
