Murray State professor of management, Sandy Miles, will be one of two people representing the U.S. at the Feb. 18-20 meetings sponsored by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation in London, England.
Gulfstream is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics which designs, develops, manufactures, markets, services and supports the world’s most technologically advanced business-jet aircraft.
Throughout her career Miles has done extensive research in Human Resources and her most notable is her research in employee branding in which Human Resource Management plays a key role.
In addition to being a certified Global Professional of Human Resources, Miles is a representative for the International Organization for Standardization.
ISO is the world’s largest developer of International Standards, which works to make industry more effective and efficient by giving specifications for products, services and good practice.
ISO has members from 162 countries and is made up of several technical committees. Miles is part of the technical committee TC-260 which will undertake standardization of human resource management
Miles said this meeting is not a plenary meeting but a meeting for two subcommittees of ISO, the Architectural Framework and Literature Census committee and the Human Governance committee, to present their deliverables to each other.
Miles is a member of both committees but was only chosen to represent the U.S. in the AFLC; a member from France will represent the Human Governance committee. She was able to give some insight as to what the two committees are responsible for.
“The deliverable we will produce for the Architectural Framework and Literature Census committee is an organizational scheme about how the work of the technical committee is going to unfold in the years to come” Miles said. “The deliverable for the Human resource committee is to put forth a proposal to ISO for a standard on human governance. Human governance is not about the policies and procedures, it is about how organizational systems are aligned in order to guide the behavior of the employees.”
Fanz Gilbert, the chair of TC-260 and the current Human Capital Planning and Projects Manager at Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation out of Savannah Ga., will also be representing the U.S. at the meeting.
Gilbert is responsible for human resources systems and metrics, learning development systems and employee records.
In order to make the meeting convenient for representatives from other countries, Gilbert scheduled the meeting at the Gulfstream facility in London, England.
Miles said she looks forward to seeing how her committee will be able to make a difference in the work place and the lives of the workers.
“It’s exciting to have an opportunity to make a positive contribution” Miles said. “Not just to the profession but hopefully to workers and the life that they are going to experience in the workplace through this initiative.”
